Sometimes, it hurt to watch Ron.

Whenever she read news about him, she’d remember the boy who had followed Harry until he wasn’t needed anymore and then followed her while she chased her dreams. She knew that she and Harry had been too close they’d failed to see beyond the boy.

Draco succeeded in two years what Ron’s entire family and friends failed at despite the lifetime they’d been given with him. It was rather pathetic if she were to be honest.

She was glad, in a bitter way, to watch the man Ron had become under Draco’s nurturing touch.

“Why do you say that?”

“I’ve always thought I shouldn’t have accepted your answer and tied you up instead.”

“You should’ve, yes.”

“Things would’ve been really different. We might not end up here.”

It was Halloween once more and this time, Ron and Draco would attend it together unlike the previous years where they’d arrived amongst friends. As always, “Dress As You Aren’t” was the theme and people still poured detail and love over costumes.

Draco still remembered Ron’s last Halloween with Hermione. He’d arrived silently, a step behind the princess that was Hermione. And he’d remained masked the entire evening.

But tonight, Draco wanted to show off. They arrived in style, fashionably late so all would see the Red King by his side.

Unmasked.

Not anyone’s knight.

But he’d left the dreams of others and followed his. He let go of his perfect family, toured the world for a ‘boring’ game and fell in love with a former enemy.

Ron twitched as Minerva gave him an earful. He did win his Shogi game but barely. He’d lost control of the midfield and took too long to reposition. He’d re-played the entire game with her several times and still couldn’t find his mistake.

“Other Masters saw you’re weak in the east variant. You’ll remain my apprentice but you’ll have to train with a different Grand Master for the east.”

Ron sighed.

She gave him a box of chocolates.

He blinked.

“Draco.” Minerva patted his head like the schoolboy he once was. “We talked and he mentioned you might need bribery.”

Ron was in a series of duels against an older Master starting today. It was a fight for a title and the handicap set for Wizard Chess was higher. The older Master could choose any chess variant. Ron hadn’t lost a single game of western chess variant but Draco worried for the other half.

He’d been staring outside nibbling his quill for so long he hadn’t noticed his secretary leave a box until she’d left.

Inside was a badge of Ron’s first win in Shogi which brought him closer to the Grand Master title, and a card that said, “Happy Birthday.”

Draco bit his quill and tried not to grin.

Ron wanted to swim, and so they went out before the crowd set in for the late morning. Draco lay on top of an airbed and let his partner do laps or pretend to be a shark around his pretentious boat.

“Care to tell me the occasion?”

Ron sprawled half his body over Draco’s legs. “It’s a busy year now that I’m playing both Muggle and Wizard chess.”

Draco was starting to hate this chess but he smiled and leaned over. Ron pulled him all the way into the water where they ignored the muted sounds of the world above.

Daily routine came too soon. Draco ported back to New York and Ron began his training for the European Cup. They had missed this year’s (and it was supposedly their official first) Valentines.

Ron leaned back against his chair and watched the game idly, his concentration shot. He still loved chess and more than enjoyed the popularity but he just felt stressed that somehow Draco was second fiddle.

His phone vibrated and he brought it out. Minerva frowned but he paid her no mind.

“Good luck,” the text message said.

And Ron smiled. Why need a particular day for Valentine?

Greece had been too hot but it was Pansy’s wedding and they were threatened to attend. Greenland had been freezing and they were very glad to finally get out of there. The entire week had been disastrous.

When they’d reached Ron’s London flat, Draco went straight for the bedroom and threw himself on the familiar bed. Ron’s European Cup would start next week and Draco would go back to work on Monday. It’d be another long while before they’d next meet.

The mattress shifted and he was soon warm and comfortable.

It always rained in London but this was enough.

They did go to Greenland, Land of Ice and Snow. Ron hadn’t thought Draco was serious. He’d never say yes again without thinking twice, especially when the boyfriend was irritated. It just might be real.

“I think my knackers permanently shrunk. This place is freezing.” Ron huffed and puffed. “Understatement of the year. I can’t even cast a decent spell because my hands are shaking!”

“I’ve never been here before so how was I supposed to know it would be this cold!” Draco’s teeth chattered, moving closer to Ron for some warmth.

Ron sighed and wrapped his arms around Draco.
